Change to EPS repeat dispensing timing logic from 18th February 2016

January 26, 2016

The Health and Social Care Information Centre (HSCIC) has announced that an alteration will be made to EPS repeat dispensing (RD) on 18th February 18th 2016. This relates to the timing for which subsequent RD batch issues can be downloaded.

Once an initial RD prescription has been dispensed, the Spine sends the nominated dispenser subsequent RD issues in advance so that the medicine can be prepared before the patient requires it. The timing logic for this will be altered. From February the timing will be linked with the practice’s intended date. The current logic, to be replaced, used timing linked with the sending of dispense messages.

New timing logic (18th February 2016 onwards)

The Spine will still send the nominated dispenser subsequent RD issues in advance so that medicine can be prepared before the patient needs it, however the timing of advance downloads will be linked with the prescriber’s issue (or appropriate/start) date, not the date of the sending of the previous issue’s dispense message.

A dispense message should still be sent in accordance with your processes, but this will not delay the start of the automatic countdown to the next issue.

Old timing logic (to be replaced)

RD issues are received onto the pharmacy system seven days before the expected end date of the previous issue. The expected end date is calculated from the date the previous issue had its dispense message sent.

For example, if a previous 28-day batch issue has its dispense message sent on 1st May, then the next issue would be received by the pharmacy 22nd May.

There could be a delay with the automatic download of subsequent issue if a previous dispense message had been sent late. Any delay may risk items not being prepared in time, although subsequent issues can be manually downloaded.

Difference: Old versus new timing logic

Pharmacy can use the EPS reference to pull down batch issues early where needed

Spine allows early download of subsequent batch issues to pharmacy associated with the date the previous issue had its dispense message sent
