Community pharmacy sites join COVID-19 vaccination efforts

January 14, 2021

Six community pharmacies are today (Thursday 14th January) becoming the first community pharmacy sites to administer COVID-19 vaccinations as part of the NHS vaccination programme.

These pharmacies, operating under the terms of a local Enhanced service, have been chosen to support vaccination efforts by local NHS teams. The sites have all had to show how they can ensure that significant volumes of patients can be vaccinated whilst maintaining social distancing procedures.

The group of four independents and two multiples will be followed by approximately 200 other community pharmacies who will open the doors on their COVID-19 vaccination sites before the end of the month.

The six community pharmacy vaccination sites now live are:

  • Boots, Halifax
  • Andrews Pharmacy, Macclesfield
  • Appleton Village Pharmacy, Widnes
  • Superdrug Pharmacy, Guildford
  • Cullimore Chemist, Edgware
  • Woodside Pharmacy, Telford

PSNC believes that many thousands of community pharmacies could support the COVID-19 vaccination programme alongside the mass and local vaccination sites and we are working with others including the NHS to scope what would be feasible.

PSNC Chief Executive Simon Dukes said:

“It is fantastic to see the first community pharmacy COVID-19 vaccination sites going live this week and we look forward to seeing more pharmacies involved in the programme in due course. We know that patients will value this and that pharmacies can make a significant contribution to the national vaccination efforts.

PSNC’s ambition to make the most of the wider network of community pharmacies remains and we welcome the support from the Leader of the Opposition for all pharmacies to have the chance to be recruited to the rollout of the vaccines. It would be a mistake to miss the opportunity to make this vaccination programme more widely available from the most accessible healthcare settings we have.”
