Flu promotional leaflet and inactivated influenza vaccine guidance published by PHE

August 10, 2018

Public Health England (PHE) has issued two useful publications relating to the Flu Vaccination Service 2018/19.

Guidance document

The guidance document on inactivated influenza vaccine information for healthcare practitioners contains detailed information relating to the vaccine, including:

  • updated guidance on vaccine administration for patients taking anticoagulants or with a bleeding disorder;
  • vaccine components to which patients may be allergic, such as egg (ovalbumin) content;
  • the exceptional use of the quadrivalent and non-adjuvanted trivalent vaccines outside of national recommendations for the 2018/19 season; and
  • clarification around administering the flu vaccine to patients with pre-existing medical conditions such as neurological conditions, immunosuppression and patients on chemotherapy.

Patient leaflet

PHE has also published a leaflet which explains to patients how they can help protect themselves and their families against flu, including who is at increased risk from flu and the importance of people at risk and their carers (where applicable) to have their free vaccination every year.

Hard copies of the leaflet can be ordered free of charge, via the online ordering portal or calling 0300 123 1002 and quoting the product code: 3079111C.

2018/19 community pharmacy service

PSNC is currently working with NHS England and the Department of Health and Social Care to finalise the revised documentation for the 2018/19 Flu Vaccination Advanced Service; this is expected to be published later this month.
