Important information on the Flu Vaccination Service 2017/18

August 4, 2017

It is four weeks today until the launch of the national community pharmacy Flu Vaccination Service 2017/18 on 1st September 2017. The Directions, service specification and Patient Group Direction for the service have not yet been published, but the service will remain very similar to the service commissioned in 2016/17.

While not confirmed until the Directions, service specification and PGD are published, the two main points of difference that we believe community pharmacy contractors need to be aware of are listed below, as well as key points that have remained the same but are important to ensure contractors are paid correctly for delivering the service:

Changes to the Flu Vaccination Service for 2017/18

  • Eligible patient groups – This year, community pharmacists can vaccinate people who are morbidly obese (aged from 18 to less than 65 years of age with a Body Mass Index ≥40kg/m2) as an eligible patient group.
  • Service paperwork – Since there is an additional eligible patient group, all the paperwork associated with the service has been updated for 2017/18 (except the form to request to provide NHS flu vaccinations to care home or long-stay residential home patients); if contractors are using paper forms, any forms from previous years should be disposed of and the new paperwork for the 2017/18 service should be used when available.

Important information on ensuring correct payment for the Flu Vaccination Service 2017/18

  • Sign up to deliver the service – Contractors must again complete the form on the NHS Business Services Authority (NHS BSA) website (this is not yet available but when ‘published’ this will be highlighted through the PSNC communication channels) prior to provision of the service to notify NHS England that they intend to provide the service for 2017/18. This must be done annually therefore even if a contractor provided the service in 2016/17 they must complete this sign-up process again. Contractors need to complete this form for all their pharmacies from which the Flu Vaccination Service will be offered. If the form is not completed before provision of the service, claims for payment will not be accepted by the NHS BSA.
  • IT support and payment claims – Some LPC areas and local NHS England teams have been able to arrange IT support for the service e.g. use of PharmOutcomes, Sonar, etc. Contractors cannot submit payment claims through these systems; payment claims for vaccinations administered must be submitted to the NHS BSA each month in line with the FP34C submission document process.
  • Payment claims for March 2018 – Payment claims for vaccinations administered during March 2018 must be submitted to the NHS BSA by 5th April 2018 in line with the FP34C submission document process. Late claims will not be processed and contractors will not receive payment for vaccinations claimed for.
