New dental factsheets available for community pharmacy teams

New dental factsheets available for community pharmacy teams

January 12, 2018

Dental symptoms are one of the most common symptom groups for callers to NHS 111, particularly at weekends. Many patients visiting emergency departments could be managed by other services including community pharmacies.

The Health Education England (HEE) Dental and Pharmacy teams across London and the South East have collaborated to produce a series of dental factsheets specifically for community pharmacy teams. They are intended to be used by patient-facing team members to help them deal with common dental and oral symptoms/conditions and signpost patients where appropriate.

The factsheets cover a wide range of dental and oral conditions and include:

  • Questions to ask the patient/carer;
  • Advice which should be given to the patient/carer;
  • Follow-up;
  • Red flag symptoms or ‘alerts’; and
  • Pharmacy products which could be recommended.

HEE would be interested to hear from pharmacy teams who have used these factsheets and whether they have found them to be worthwhile. HEE has therefore made available a pre-evaluation tally chart which covers a four-week period and an evaluation survey. Completing these will help HEE inform the production of future relevant content.
