Description

The Atrial Fibrillation (AF) Screening Service provides patients at high risk of AF with a consultation which gathers information and screens them for atrial fibrillation using a mobile ECG device called AliveCor Kardia which provides a 1-lead ECG reading.

Patients who have this arrhythmia detected will be counselled by the pharmacist about the implications of a potential diagnosis and referred to their GP for confirmation of diagnosis and management of atrial fibrillation in particular for referral to have an ECG undertaken.

The cohort of people eligible for this service is:

  • Aged over 65 years old
  • Aged under 65yr’s old with: diabetes; cardiac disease and hypertension

The Pharmacy will identify eligible people who will be asked to undertake a test to detect possible Atrial Fibrillation using an AliveCor Kardia device linked to a smart phone or tablet.

Training

The testing will be provided by pharmacists who have attended mandatory AF upskilling training provided by East Midlands Clinical Network in partnership with East Midlands Academic Health Science Network.
