Screening
The service offers opportunistic screening for chlamydia and gonorrhoea for asymptomatic young people aged 16-24 within pharmacies located in Trafford.

R U Clear is the chlamydia and gonorrhoea screening programme for Greater Manchester.

Contractors participating in the R U Clear screening programme will:

  • promote the R U Clear chlamydia and gonorrhoea screening programme and communicate the importance of regular screening to young people (16-24s) accessing services from the pharmacy;
  • issue R U Clear chlamydia and gonorrhoea home screening kits to young people (16-24s) accessing services from the pharmacy, as and when appropriate;
  • ensure that clients accepting an R U Clear chlamydia and gonorrhoea home screening kit are provided with information, advice and guidance about how to take and return the sample;
  • ensure that clients accepting an R U Clear chlamydia and gonorrhoea home screening kit are provided with information, advice and guidance about sexually transmitted infections including chlamydia and gonorrhoea; and
  • ensure that clients accepting an R U Clear chlamydia and gonorrhoea home screening kit are offered a number of condoms as agreed by the Commissioner.

Treatment of chlamydia (separate service)
Contractors acting as a treatment site for the R U Clear chlamydia and gonorrhoea screening programme will:

  • promote the R U Clear* chlamydia and gonorrhoea screening programme and communicate the importance of regular screening to young people (16-24s) accessing services from the pharmacy;
  • consult with clients (index patients and their partners) attending for treatment of chlamydia and, as and when appropriate, to supply medication in accordance with the Patient Group Directions (PGDs) for azithromycin, doxycycline and/or erythromycin issued by Trafford Metropolitan Borough Council;
  • ensure that clients receive information and advice about sexually transmitted infections and how to obtain sexual health screening; and
  • ensure that clients receive information and advice about condoms and are offered and are offered a number of condoms as agreed by the Commissioner.

Training

Pharmacists who wish to provide the service must undertake relevant learning and training – e.g. CPPE modules relating to the treatment of chlamydia in order to complete the Declaration of Competence for the service.

Pharmacists must also attend an annual briefing event organised through the Greater Manchester Sexual Health Network.

All staff (pharmacists and counter staff) involved in the distribution of Ruclear home screening kits must receive on-site training from Ruclear (CMFT).
