To reduce the number of unwanted pregnancies in Stockport and raise awareness of sexually transmitted infections through the supply of levonorgestrel emergency hormonal contraception (EHC).

The service is available to women of child bearing age who present to an accredited pharmacist working in a registered community pharmacy commissioned to provide the EHC via PGD service in Stockport. A pregnancy test can be offered if the pharmacist determines there is a clinical need).

The pharmacist is also able to offer as appropriate a postal kit for testing of chlamydia trachomatis to women under the age of 25.

All community pharmacists providing the service are required to complete the requirements of the Centre of Pharmacy Postgraduate Education (CPPE), namely;

  • Emergency hormonal contraception;
  • Contraception;
  • Open learning programme and on line assessment, ‘Child Protection: a guide to the pharmacy team’ or Safeguarding Children; and
  • Patient Group Directions (PGDs).

In addition they must attend local workshops and complete other material as required by Public Health Stockport.

Each accredited pharmacist is required to complete a self declaration of competency for accreditation status at least every 3 years.
