Description

The overall aim is to promote the use of, and maintain access to, emergency hormonal contraception (supplied as levonorgestrel 1500mcg tablet under Patient Group Direction) in order to reduce the number of unintended conceptions among women of all ages living in Trafford.

As well as consulting with patients who present for EHC, pharmacists who offer the service must also ensure that client are provided with information and advice about:

  • regular methods of contraception including long-acting, reliable methods such as implants and intrauterine devices and how to obtain them;
  • sexually transmitted infections and how to obtain sexual health screening; and
  • condoms and are offered an amount of condoms as agreed by the Commissioner.

Training

Pharmacists participating in the provision of EHC must undertake relevant learning and training – e.g. CPPE modules relating to the provision of emergency hormonal contraception and attend an annual briefing event organised through the Greater Manchester Sexual Health Network.
