Christmas & New Year Bank Holidays

Christmas & New Year Bank Holidays

September 21, 2021

For the Christmas and New Year period 2021/22, we would like to remind you that Boxing Day (26th December) will fall on a Sunday and New Year’s Day (1st January) will fall on a Saturday. These are both normal working days for pharmacy opening hours (contracted hours). In the UK, if a bank holiday is on a weekend, a ‘substitute’ weekday becomes the bank holiday instead.

If you wish reduce your opening hours on these dates you will need to contact the local NHSE&I Team, with notification for supplementary hours changes or apply for core hour changes.

Please note: Notice must be given at least 3 months in advance, unless NHSE&I agrees otherwise. Therefore, the last day to give notice for 26th December, for any guaranteed reduction in supplementary hours, is on 26th September, and NHSE&I must receive the notification, for example, by email, on or before that date.

This briefing from PSNC provides further information and includes a link to the form you will need to complete.

Key Date Summary

25th December is always a statutory holiday regardless of which day of the week it falls on therefore there is no need to inform NHSE that you will be closed.

Sunday 26th December (boxing day) is not the statutory holiday so anyone with core opening hours on a Sunday would need to apply to NHSE if they wish to close, and anyone with supplementary hours will need to notify NHSE that they wish to close, by 26th September.

Monday 27th December and Tuesday 28th December are substitute bank holiday and you are not required to open, nor to apply to/notify NHSE if you wish to close.

Saturday 1st January is NOT the bank holiday, therefore anyone core opening hours on a Saturday would need to apply to NHSE if they wish to close, and anyone with supplementary hours will need to notify NHSE that they wish to close, by 1st October.

Monday 3rd January is the substitute bank holiday and you are not required to open, nor to apply to/notify NHSE if you wish to close.
