Take home Naloxone programme – Download Poster Here

As you may be aware Public Health Dorset have recently implemented a take home Naloxone programme which makes Naloxone available via nine specialist drug services pan-Dorset. There are six EDP bases in Dorset, SMART and PACT in Poole and Addiction in Bournemouth.

Below is information regarding the service and contact details should you require further information.

Naloxone is being issued in the form of a community licensed kit called Prenoxad which contains a pre-filled syringe and two intramuscular needles for injection of individuals suspected of overdosing on opiates. Naloxone works to reverse the effects of the opiates and bring the individual into withdrawal and restores respiratory function.

At present both engaged and non-engaged opiate users can approach for supply as well as their family, concerned others such as friends, carers and community team staff involved with opiate users – rough sleeper team leads, bail hostel and night shelter staff.

SWAST and Dorset Police have agreed to accept used Prenoxad kits for safe disposal. This is the most likely disposal route that will be used and those receiving kits will have been trained to seal the used needles within the safe box the kit comes in and either return used kits to issuing services for replacement or give them to the emergency services. You may find that on a rare occasion recipients of kits incorrectly return them to pharmacies for disposal if they are already familiar with using the pharmacy needle exchange service. If any kits are received these can be disposed of following the usual clinical practice and the needles should be contained within the Prenoxad safe box which acts as a mini sharps container. The returning recipient should be directed to return to the issuing services for re-supply.
