Gluten Free: reduced prescribing

Gluten Free: reduced prescribing

November 18, 2016

After a number of weeks of finalisation of the CCGs position on the local prescribing of GF foods, the attached was circulated to all our GP practices on Friday. The CCG has not taken this decision lightly, reflected in the fact that is has taken a number of months of consideration to arrive at this local position, as part of our ‘Choosing Wisely in Gloucestershire’ agenda.

Over the next few weeks, our expectation is that Gloucestershire GP practices will be preparing to significantly reduce their GF prescribing from 30th Nov and therefore local community pharmacists will be dispensing a significantly reduced number of prescriptions for these items. As you will be aware, most pharmacies do not keep large stocks of GF products but order in as and when required. Therefore, this change should not cause a significant stock holding issues with pharmacies.

Mark Gregory
