Healthy Living Pharmacy
The Healthy Living Pharmacy scheme recognises the valuable role that community pharmacies can play in supporting people to live healthier lives and in promoting health and wellbeing. It fits with the vision of community pharmacies as the first port of call for vital healthcare and health and wellbeing advice. This makes sense as pharmacies are the most accessible and frequently-visited source of healthcare.
This section of our website guides you through the process of achieving HLP Level 1 and delivering it successfully in your pharmacy. HLP Resource Pack
Please find below a link to the full HLP resources pack for the Greater Manchester Healthy Living Pharmacy service. Each pharmacy team should download a copy of the resources to enable them to deliver HLP and record HLP conversations.
Qualifying for and achieving HLP Level 1
Qualifying pharmacies can register as a Healthy Living Pharmacy Level 1 by completing the new self-assessment process quality-assured by the Royal Society for Public Health.
Completion of this process will enable pharmacies to obtain their 20 Quality Payments points and associated payment (up to £1,280 for achieving HLP Level 1).
To complete the process in full, pharmacies will need to:
- work through the HLP Level 1 quality criteria
- complete Leadership and Health Champion Training
- evidence HLP activity and log interactions
- complete an online assessment of compliance form and submit it to the RSPH
HLP Leadership training needs to be attended by someone in a leadership capacity, usually a pharmacist. The Health Champion training can be attended by any member of your pharmacy team, including healthcare assistants and technicians. Only one person needs to attend each of these training sessions, and they do not need to be the same person.
If you have attended HLP training previously there is no need to attend further training unless you feel it would be beneficial.
Registration to the RSPH HLP self-assessment process is currently free and you should receive confirmation and a certificate within 10 working days of completing the process.

HLP Level 1 Quality Payments
Pharmacies can claim 20 Quality Payments points – worth £1,280 – if they have achieved HLP Level 1 (and pass the quality payments gateway criteria) at either the April or November review date. Find out more.
Greater Manchester Dementia-Friendly Pharmacy Framework
Greater Manchester pharmacies are working to become more dementia-friendly and promote dementia awareness as part of the HLP scheme. The GM Dementia-Friendly Pharmacy Framework is an easy-to-follow toolkit that helps you measure how dementia-friendly your pharmacy is. It also guides you to making improvements over time so your pharmacy is as welcoming as possible for people with dementia.
