Leicestershire County Public Health

Leicestershire County Council is now responsible for most of the public health services run previously by the NHS. The Public Health team in the county leads on improving health and helping people lead more healthy lifestyles.

It commissions key services ranging from support to quit smoking, to advice on breastfeeding and services to improve mental health and wellbeing.  Leicestershire County Council is now responsible for Commissioning:

  • Children’s public health
  • Sexual health
  • Public mental health
  • Obesity programmes
  • Drug misuse
  • Alcohol misuse
  • Tobacco control
  • Nutrition
  • NHS Health Check Programme
  • Reducing and preventing birth defects
  • Health at work
  • Accidental injury prevention
  • Seasonal mortality
By operating from County Hall, the Public Health team has the opportunity to link up with the other Council work that affects health such as social care, transport and libraries.
The Director of Public Health is also ensures that broader plans are in place to protect the health of the population e.g. from infectious diseases. The Public Health team works closely with NHS colleagues, particularly CCGs, to provide advice and ensure local health services closely match the health needs of local people.
