  • HLPs improve the public’s health and drive improvements in service quality and innovation.
  • People walking into a HLP are twice as likely to set a quit date than if they walked into a non- HLP. 
  • HLPs consistently deliver high-quality public health services – NHS health checks, weight management, sexual health, etc. 
  • HLPs reach out to local communities (universities, businesses, schools, community centres, etc) with health improvement advice and services.

Royal Society of Public Health, Reducing premature mortality: the role of community pharmacies (February 2015)

  • Since its launch in 2009, the HLP framework has been adopted by over 800 pharmacies, with an estimated 3000 pharmacy-based health champions now trained to offer brief advice and brief interventions.

Evaluation of the Healthy Living Pharmacy pathfinder work programme 2011/12 (April 2013)

  • The public have welcomed the Healthy Living Pharmacy (HLP) concept and their feedback has suggested that HLPs do deliver benefits for the public and patients.
  • Indications from the public reported survey of services accessed in HLPs are that there could be benefits for a wider population base if the concept were to be rolled out more extensively.
  • Community pharmacy continues to play an important and increasing role in delivering health and wellbeing services and the HLP framework appears to be a significant platform through which pharmacy’s role in delivering public health services can be maximised.
  • Based on a sample of 1,034 individuals there is strong evidence to suggest that the public have a positive opinion of the services delivered by HLPs.
  • The public rated the services delivered by HLPs highly. Endorsement and acceptability was seen in all localities that reported, and for all services evaluated.
  • Teams within HLPs engaged with people who would otherwise have done nothing and would not have sought out healthy lifestyle support or advice – over 20% of the people surveyed said they would not have gone anywhere else for the service, demonstrating the impact of HLPs in helping people lead healthier lifestyles.
  • 60% of individuals participating would otherwise have gone to their GPs, showing that there may be opportunities for community pharmacy to support GP practices in delivering health and wellbeing support, which could reduce the workload burden within GP practices.
  • The services were universally well received, with almost all users comfortable to receive services in the pharmacy setting, happy with how they were treated by the pharmacy staff, and they felt that the pharmacy staff gave them enough information. This was further reflected in the fact that 98% would recommend the service they used to others.

Headline findings from Portsmouth LPC evaluation include:

  • 140% increase in smoking quits from pharmacies compared with the previous year.
  • 75% of the 200 smokers with asthma or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease who had a Medicines Use Review accepted help to stop smoking.
  • Smokers walking into a HLP in Portsmouth were twice as likely to set a quit date and give up compared to a person walking into a pharmacy which is not an HLP.
  • Smoking quits delivering 142% of target and with a quit rate of 67% (2010/11).
  • Over 3,500 individuals received brief advice on safe alcohol consumption; 36% were at increasing risk and 10% at high risk from current levels of use.
  • 70% of patients with a respiratory condition showed an improvement in the management of their condition as a result of the pharmacist intervention. Quality and productivity has been sustained.
  • 126 clients successfully lost weight with more than half achieving a total weight loss of greater than 5%.
