Australian exchange programme for recently qualified pharmacists

Pharmacists who recently qualified in the UK are being invited to apply for an exciting opportunity to experience community pharmacy in Australia.

The World Pharmacy Council has established an exchange programme for pharmacists, supported by a scholarship.

Community pharmacy practice varies in different countries, and the successful applicant will have the chance to identify opportunities to develop their practice as well as becoming an advocate for the profession. This is a great opportunity for a recently qualified pharmacist to add a global context to their ongoing development, expand their network and open up different opportunities for professional and personal growth.

A scholarship of $Au50,000 (equivalent to £26,000 at the current exchange rate) will be awarded to the successful applicant. The scholar will be expected to spend between four and twelve months in Australia, and will later be invited to speak to the annual conference of the World Pharmacy Council on their experiences.

As part of the exchange programme, the UK applicant is encouraged to have a sponsoring pharmacy that will host the Australian pharmacist for part of their time in the UK. Meanwhile, the Pharmacy Guild of Australia will assist the UK scholar with finding a placement in Australia.

Applications must be submitted by Wednesday 16th March 2022 and should confirm that the applicant meets the five eligibility criteria:

  1. Have completed an undergraduate pharmacy qualification and hold current registration as a pharmacist with the General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC) or Pharmaceutical Society of Northern Ireland (PSNI);
  2. Have been working for fewer than 5 years in a pharmacy role;
  3. Currently employed in an independent community pharmacy role;
  4. Citizen of a World Pharmacy Council member country (Australia, Denmark, Ireland, New Zealand, Portugal, Spain, UK, USA); and
  5. Can commence their exchange within six months of receiving the scholarship (travel restrictions permitting).
