Contractor Notice: SSP010: Levothyroxine 12.5mcg tablets expired

April 1, 2021

Following the implementation of SSP010, DHSC has announced that sufficient stock of Levothyroxine 12.5mcg tablets is now available to supply normal demand; as a result the SSP010 for Levothyroxine 12.5mcg tablets expired at 23.59pm at Thursday 1st April 2021. Any prescriptions for Levothyroxine 12.5mcg tablets after this date must be dispensed in accordance with the prescription, as the SSP will no longer be valid for use.

Top Tips

  • View our SSP submission reminder to ensure your SSP claims are appropriately submitted to NHSBSA  for reimbursement.
  • Pharmacy teams are advised to submit SSP claims using the EPS token if your PMR systems do not support/capture all the SSP endorsement requirements for a valid claim.
  • If using a token to submit SSP claims, to avoid double-claiming, remember to mark the item covered by the SSP as ‘Not Dispensed’/’ND’ on the EPS message.
  • Where available, use the claim amend facility on your PMR system to rectify any incorrect EPS claims already submitted this month.
  • Any paper prescriptions or tokens with SSP claims need to be placed in a red separator (and kept separate from other tokens for non-payment i.e. with paid/exempt status).
  • Check that the correct number of patient charges are collected and declared on the end of month FP34C submission form.
  • SSPs will be accepted for up to three calendar months after expiry or withdrawal of the SSP. For example, for the Levothyroxine 12.5mcg tablets, which was withdrawn on 1st April, the NHSBSA would look for the “NCSO” endorsement in the April batch (submitted by the 5th of May), May batch (submitted by the 5th June) and June batch (submitted by the 5th of July).
  • NHSBSA advise that contractor SSP claims should be clear and unambiguous and follow the protocol guidelines – NHSBSA processing staff must be able to determine what has been supplied.
  • Pharmacy contractors should keep a record of all SSP claims and reconcile when their Schedule of Payments are sent.

Additional information

On 26th March 2021 it was announced that the Secretary of State had further extended SSP010 to 1st April 2021 to help manage the supply of Levothyroxine 12.5mcg tablets. This SSP was put in place to manage stock and to try to ensure that fewer patients have to return to their prescriber.
