COVID-19 Update: Easter 2020 Opening Hours

April 1, 2020

The four national community pharmacy representative organisations have this evening (1 April) issued a joint statement on Easter 2020 opening hours.

AIM, CCA, NPA and PSNC have been informed this afternoon that NHS England and NHS Improvement (NHSE&I) may shortly announce that community pharmacies must open for at least some time on Good Friday and Bank Holiday Monday.

PSNC has been in urgent discussions with NHSE&I about this matter, asking the NHS to take a proportionate approach based on evidence that there will be real increased need for pharmaceutical services on those days.

PSNC is keen, like all parts of the NHS, to ensure that patients have access to any pharmaceutical services that they need over the Easter Bank Holiday weekend. However, our view is that the increase in prescription volumes seen over the past few weeks as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic may mean that the usual seasonal demand has been largely met already, and we are keen to ensure that neither too few nor too many pharmacies are open over Easter.

In a joint statement the four national pharmacy organisations have said that already several thousand pharmacies are planning to open over the Easter holiday period.

The statement says: “We hope that any directive of the sector is based upon the clear evidence of a need for additional pharmacy care over and above that already planned.”

We will issue further information to contractors as soon as we have it.
