EPS Phase 4 rollout to begin with TPP SystmOne GP system

October 22, 2019

NHS Digital will be rolling out EPS Phase 4 to additional GP practices using the TPP SystmOne GP system from Monday 18th November 2019, so all community pharmacy teams should be aware that they could start to receive EPS Phase 4 tokens from patients to process.

GP practices using the TPP SystmOne GP system will have Phase 4 rolled out in the coming weeks, with dates for EMIS, Microtest and Vision GP practices to be decided shortly. Specific dates will be made available on NHS Digital’s EPS Phase 4 deployment schedule webpage.

The start of the national rollout follows a successful pilot which tested the functionality in all four GP prescribing systems. The pilot began in November 2018 and involved 60 GP practices across England.

Under EPS Phase 4, patients can choose to take their token to any pharmacy in England. If you receive a Phase 4 token, simply scan the barcode and dispense it as you would any other electronic prescription.

As with all EPS prescriptions, dispense notifications and endorsements need to be added to the electronic prescription using your pharmacy system. Endorsements written or printed onto any type of EPS token will not be processed by the NHS Business Services Authority (NHSBSA).

Commenting on the further rollout, PSNC Chief Executive, Simon Dukes, said:

“We are very pleased to see EPS rolling out nationally so that even more patients can take advantage of this digital NHS service. Pharmacies across England have been piloting electronic prescriptions for some time and they will benefit from the simpler and more secure processes that this final roll out will bring.”

PSNC previously highlighted top tips for processing Phase 4 prescriptions and you can learn more about EPS Phase 4 on our  webpage.
