Abbott have advised that they are experiencing some temporary supply problems with FreeStyle Libre sensors. Abbott has issued the following statement, updated on the 6th February 2020.

‘We are sorry for the recent temporary delays in fulfilling orders of FreeStyle Libre sensors and for the impact this has caused. Order delays have been reduced substantially and you should now receive your order approximately one week after placing it. We are working hard to fulfil all order requests and get back to typical shipping times in the coming weeks. Please only order what you need and then re-order as required. Thank you for your continued cooperation and patience as we resolve this situation. ‘

Community pharmacy teams unable to obtain supplies of the sensors are advised to refer any affected patients back to their prescriber for consideration of alternative monitoring methods in the interim period.

FreeStyle Libre sensors are listed as an Appliance in Part IXA of the Drug Tariff which can be dispensed against NHS prescriptions. The sensors can only be ordered directly from Abbott through their pharmacy ordering portal.

PSNC has a resource relating to dispensing appliances and includes FAQs you may find helpful.
