GDPR update: Notifying the ICO about DPOs

GDPR update: Notifying the ICO about DPOs

May 24, 2018

The General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) is due to come into effect tomorrow (25th May 2018), but PSNC has received reports that community pharmacy contractors have been finding it difficult to get through to the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) via its helpline and that the ICO website is also unavailable.

As stated in the Community Pharmacy GDPR Working Party GDPR guidance and materials, it is important that contractors register with the ICO as a data controller, as well as providing details of their pharmacy’s Data Protection Officer (DPO).

With the ICO experiencing an unusually high number of enquiries, PSNC recommends that contractors instead emailing all the necessary information to Contractors who are already registered with the ICO should include:

  • The contractor’s ICO registration number (e.g. Z5347709); and
  • The contractor’s ICO security number (if you can’t find this, email the ICO and they will resend it to the main contact).

The ICO will let you know when the change has been made, and send you a copy of the amended register entry. The changes will be dated from the day the ICO receives the change request.

Whilst everybody wants to be able to demonstrate they have the appropriate systems and thinking in place, informally, those involved with GDPR are not expecting everybody to be fully compliant by 25th May 2018.
