HEE Update: Interim Foundation Pharmacist Programme

HEE Update: Interim Foundation Pharmacist Programme

July 30, 2020

Health Education England (HEE) has issued an update on its new Interim Foundation Pharmacist Programme (IFPP) to support provisionally registered pharmacists.

In a letter to the 2019/20 pre-registration pharmacists, HEE explained that those who are eligible to join the General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC) provisional register, will be able to access the programme, which will provide them with the foundation training support they need. This follows on from last week’s announcement that the planned reform of initial education and training for pharmacists would be accelerated as a result of the situation following the COVID-19 pandemic.

The IFPP is a fully funded 12-month education and training programme, starting in September 2020. It will give support to provisionally registered pharmacists to assist them in providing safe and effective patient care and NHS services.

Aiming to develop pharmacists’ ability to achieve high quality outcomes for patients, improve patient safety and reduce medication errors, the new IFPP will also inform the development of a full UK-wide Foundation Pharmacist Programme for future years.

HEE is planning regular communications from the programme team, including FAQs and points of contact to enable information sharing. In the meantime, any queries can be sent to fpp@hee.nhs.uk
