NHS turns 70: how pharmacy teams can get involved

March 29, 2018

2018 marks 70 years since the NHS came into being and events are being planned throughout the year to celebrate this milestone.

NHS England has created a resources centre to help NHS healthcare organisations to get involved and, as an integral part of the NHS, community pharmacy teams are encouraged to join in by holding a local event, nominating colleagues for an award, or simply sharing positive patient outcomes on social media.

Things that pharmacy teams and LPCs can do include:

  • using the branding graphics plus other digital assets on the pharmacy’s website and in patient communications (these are available from the resources centre);
  • sharing positive stories about the pharmacy team and patients on social media using the #NHS70 hashtag;
  • creating displays showcasing successes (e.g. becoming a Healthy Living Pharmacy) or sharing plans for the pharmacy (e.g. if you are starting to provide a new service);
  • holding an ‘NHS Big 7Tea’ event (brand pack available from the resources centre) as an opportunity for the local community to share positive pharmacy stories;
  • encouraging pharmacy staff and patients to support the NHS at 70 and The Cultural History of the NHS projects, which are collecting stories and memories of the NHS; and
  • using the NHS’s 70th birthday as the theme of the LPC’s annual awards ceremony.

Further information and ideas can be found in the resources centre.

A patient-facing website has also been created to keep the public informed about the NHS’s 70th birthday celebrations. Pharmacy teams may wish to make patients aware of it.

The One Show patient awards

As part of the NHS’s 70th birthday celebrations, the BBC’s The One Show has launched an award to say ‘thank you’ to NHS staff and volunteers who have gone the extra mile.

With support from TV presenter Angela Rippon and the Patients Association, the popular show is asking patients, their families and staff to nominate in five award categories: children and young people’s care; healthcare; nursing; lifetime achievement; and unsung hero.

Nominations can be made here; the closing date is 5th April.
