Pharmacy application process begins online transition

December 2, 2019

Primary Care Support England (PCSE) has launched the first stage of digitising the pharmacy market entry application process.

This new approach for pharmacy applications will see the replacement of multiple paper forms with one single online application, accessible via the ‘PCSE Online’ portal. Whilst known collectively as ‘market entry’, these forms include applications for change of ownership, consolidation and relocation as well as applications for new pharmacies.

It is hoped that PCSE’s new system will provide a straightforward online application process that automatically checks applications for completeness before they are submitted.

As part of a managed rollout, a selected group of pharmacies will be the first to make applications online with only a limited number of forms being available at first. Subject to a successful pilot phase, the remaining forms are expected to move online in early 2020.

Invited to join the pilot group were 25 of the biggest contractors plus some others recommended by PSNC. PCSE’s Pharmacy Engagement Team has already started supporting these pharmacies to both allocate user administrators and educate them on using the new system.

Earlier this year PSNC helped facilitate a preview of the system for interested contractors, who provided vital early testing and feedback. As a potentially helpful tool, PSNC will continue to work with PCSE on the development of its market entry online portal prior to full rollout.

Further information about pharmacy applications is available on our Market entry regulations webpage.
