Pharmacy run COVID-19 vaccination sites target health inequalities

January 21, 2021

A second wave of community pharmacies have joined the NHS COVID-19 vaccination programme.

The 65 pharmacy-run sites began offering vaccination appointments from 8am today (Thursday 21st January). Playing to the strengths of community pharmacies as socially inclusive healthcare providers, the majority of the sites are in areas where they are best placed to reach groups at higher risk of mortality from COVID-19 or where, until now, there has been no local vaccination site.

These pharmacies, operating under the terms of a local Enhanced service, have been chosen to support vaccination efforts by local NHS teams. The sites have all had to show how they can ensure that significant volumes of patients can be vaccinated whilst maintaining social distancing procedures. Plans continue for approximately 130 more community pharmacies to open COVID-19 vaccination sites under the same terms before the end of the month.

The 65 pharmacy sites going live in the second wave include:

  • Lincoln Pharmacy in Tower Hamlets, London;
  • The Odeon cinema in Aylesbury;
  • A Mosque in Birmingham;
  • The Whalley Range Tennis and Cricket Club in Manchester; and
  • More than 55 other independent pharmacy sites.

PSNC believes that many thousands of community pharmacies could support the COVID-19 vaccination programme alongside the mass and local vaccination sites and we are working with others including the NHS to scope what would be feasible.
