Steve Barclay returns to DHSC as Health Secretary

The Rt Hon Steve Barclay MP has been appointed as the new Secretary of State for Health and Social Care. This follows the appointment of Rishi Sunak MP as Leader of the Conservative Party and Prime Minister of the UK.
Mr Barclay takes over from Therese Coffey MP who held the health brief for 7 weeks following the appointment of Liz Truss MP as Prime Minister on 5th September.
Mr Barclay, Conservative MP for North-East Cambridgeshire, was first elected in 2010 and was previously Health secretary between June – September 2022, following the resignation of Sajid Javid MP.
Before this, he previously had a brief stint as a Heath Minister, which involved responsibility for NHS workforce and finance. Other former roles include Chief Secretary to the Treasury and Secretary of State for Exiting the European Union.

He re-joins the Department at a crucial time for community pharmacy as we continue to experience unsustainable and damaging pressures, due to chronic underfunding of the sector.
We look forward to working with Mr Barclay, the Pharmacy Minister and their colleagues to further dialogue about the future role and funding of community pharmacy.”
