Supply Disruption Alert – Phenytoin Sodium NRIM 100mg capsules (Accord)

January 10, 2020

Department of Health and Social Care (DHSC) has issued a supply disruption alert for Phenytoin Sodium NRIM 100mg capsules. Accord will be out of stock until early May 2020.

Phenytoin is classified by the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) as a Category 1 anti-epileptic drug; for these drugs, prescribers are advised to ensure that their patient is maintained on a specific manufacturer’s product.

An alternative phenytoin sodium 100mg capsules manufactured by Flynn Pharma is available, however switching to an alternative formulation requires monitoring and may also require specialist support, advice or referral.

The alert contains advice on the management of affected patients.

The DHSC Medicine Supply Team provide a monthly update on potential supply issues affecting both primary and secondary care. This update is uploaded on the Specialist Pharmacy Services (SPS) website. To register, you will need  an NHS email address. Once set up and logged in, you will be able to access it online.
