The funding imposition: raising awareness

The funding imposition: raising awareness

October 21, 2016

Since the Government’s decision to impose a new funding package on community pharmacy, contractors, LPCs and pharmacy teams may well have been following developments in both the pharmacy and national media.

The imposition followed PSNC’s rejection of the Department of Health’s proposals last week and Chief Executive Sue Sharpe has stressed that PSNC is “very concerned about the impact that this will have on patients”.

It is extremely disappointing news, particularly given the incredible efforts that have gone into securing the recent national media and Parliamentary coverage.

PSNC and the other national pharmacy organisations are continuing to work to ensure that the media and politicians are aware of the imposition announcement and the ongoing concerns about community pharmacy. LPCs have also been contacting local MPs and other stakeholders.

As well as coverage on yesterday’s BBC and ITV evening news programmes, this morning brought coverage in a range of national newspapers, including The Telegraph, The Mirror, The Daily Mail and The Sun.

LPCs are also working with local newspapers who have been picking up on the story with articles such as this in Norfolk and this in Cornwall; other areas may follow suit. A template press release is available to help with this work.

How can you help?

Over the coming months we will be working closely with LPCs to help the sector to adapt to the changes. We must also continue to build on the phenomenal support we now have among politicians from all parties and the general public to make the case for pharmacy’s long-term future.

PSNC will be going through the announcement and impact assessment in more detail and working with the other pharmacy organisations to develop more detailed plans for the next phase of our campaign for community pharmacy, but for now you may like to consider the following actions over the weekend:

  • Tweet the link to the Government imposition announcement,  perhaps using our template tweets to engage local politicians: Tweet templates
  • If you receive any requests for media comments, please speak to your LPC in the first instance.
  • Send your case studies about how your pharmacy is helping your local community and how it may be affected by cuts to your LPC or
  • Let us know about any media or MP successes you have by emailing
