One Life Suffolk: Weight stigma workshop for Healthcare Professionals
Monday, 17 July, 2017 19:00-20:00
Seminar Room 2, Postgraduate Education Centre, The Ipswich Hospital NHS Trust, Heath Road, Ipswich, IP4 5PD
This free weight stigma workshop is being put on as part of the recently launched campaign which aims to destigmatise the portrayal of people of all body weights across key organisations, in particular amongst health professionals in Suffolk, thereby improving the working and community environments where people are living, working and spending their lives.
The workshop will provide an overview of research evidence that demonstrates weight stigma and discrimination in the UK, in particular, evidence of weight stigma in healthcare.
The implications of weight stigma and discrimination for healthcare delivery will be discussed as well as opportunities to intervene. Finally, guideline principles to reduce weight stigma and discrimination based on research evidence will be discussed in terms of their use in healthcare settings.
The speaker on the evening will be Dr Stuart W. Flint (Senior Research Fellow in Public Health & Obesity). The workshop will be of interest to staff who have a management responsibility, from senior management to supervisors. The benefits of attending the workshop include increased awareness of weight stigma and discrimination in healthcare, why it is important to reduce weight stigma and discrimination to improve practice and patient experience, and there will be practical guidelines discussed that could be used and implemented within the workplace.
